Cinema Paradiso
The Karate Kid, Robinhood, Edge of Darkness, A-Team, Toy Story 3 and finally Shutter Island. It was a movie bonanza over the past month when some great movies got released in India, finally. Among them A-team was the most disappointing. Loaded with pulsating action and a fine actor in Liam Neeson, it just failed to deliver. The other movies were certainly good if not great.
THE KARATE KID
Cast: Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan and others.
Director: Harald Zwart
THE KARATE KID
Cast: Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan and others.
Director: Harald Zwart

The Karate Kid, a remake of a touted 1984 classic of the same name, featured Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. Dre’s mom has to shift to Bejing and the kid finds it astonishingly different from Detroit and is at sea. Han, a maintenance man comes to his rescue while he is bullied by a kung fu prodigy. Later Han teaches the art of Kung Fu to Dre who goes on to win the reputed Kung Fu tournament against all odds. The movie has no surprises but for Jaden and Jackie. Jaden’s portrayal as Dre Parker is certain to make Daddy dearest proud while Jackie as Han is very much on a serious note throughout the movie.
TOY STORY 3
Cast: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and others.
Director: Lee Unkrich
Toy Story 3 establishes Disney and Pixar’s supremacy in the animation arena yet again. They have hit the bulls eye three times in a row with Wall E, UP and Toy Story 3. We have the super heroes in Buzz and Woody with Tim Allen and Tom Hanks voicing over yet again. Lee Unkrich wields the megaphones alone this time. No one could have guessed animated movies about plastic playstuff could be this exciting and fun filled. But here we are almost 15 years from the first ever Toy Story and the journey continue with the third part. Probably another Oscar sweep in the offing.
ROBINHOOD
Cast: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and others
Director: Ridley Scott

Huge expectations are a part of the package when a movie involves Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe. Robinhood, their fifth collaboration was no exception and almost justified their interest in the lore. If you expect the cold rivalry between Robin and his merry men and the Sheriff of Nottingham, you are sure to be disappointed. The latest version based on the fascinating lore of Robinhood is unique and has a new story to say. The movie is based on adventures of a large scale revealing Robin’s true identity and why he was brandished as an outlaw. Excellence was visible in every department. Be it Russell’s intense performance or the cinematography or the fight choreography on the shores of Wales, the list is simply endless. Kevin Costner may finally realize his folly if he watches the film.
EDGE OF DARKNESS
Cast : Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone and Others
Director: Martin Campbell
EDGE OF DARKNESS
Cast : Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone and Others
Director: Martin Campbell

Edge of Darkness may remind many of Taken. The movie travels at a sedate pace like a slithering snake which can strike at any given moment. Mel Gibson is exceedingly good with the revenge saga. He is actually the only actor who can portray the sane savage to perfection. Dead bodies all over the place, a Massachusetts Cop’s daughter who is shot dead on the porch and more bodies follow while the whole nation could be under a sever security threat. Crime written all over it, the movie has all the ingredients for a high octane drama and the man for the job in Mel Gibson. It is the perfect movie for Mel to break his 6 year hiatus.
SHUTTER ISLAND
Cast: Leo Di Caprio, Mark Ruffalo, Sir Ben Kingsley and others
Director: Martin Scorcese

SHUTTER ISLAND
Cast: Leo Di Caprio, Mark Ruffalo, Sir Ben Kingsley and others
Director: Martin Scorcese

The surprise package of the lot by a large distance is Shutter Island. The movie is an adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel of the same name. Like Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe, Martin Scorcese and Leonardo Di Caprio carry huge expectations and have proved once again how good they are as a team. Set in retro mode, the movie revolves around a maximum security mental facility. Teddy Daniels (Leo) and Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) are US Marshalls who are sent to Ashecliffe Hospital to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando. Every passing day, they encounter mind boggling mysteries as they try to find the missing patient. The movies is shockingly good and is a must watch.
